DairyProBC
This exciting and rewarding certified apprenticeship program offers learners two potential industry recognized Certificate of Qualification. The program is open to individuals seeking careers in the dairy industry or those already in the industry wishing to earn their trade credential. Completion of Grade 10 including English and Science are recommended. Grade 12 graduation with Science and Biology is preferred. Successful completion of the program results in a DPT1 (Dairy Production Technician 1) and DPT2 (Dairy Production Technician 2-Herdsperson). These credentials may be transferrable to other areas in Canada.

During the program, students attend class several days during the month and work the remainder of the days on the farm of their Employer. Apprentices receive salary as negotiated with the Employer. Fair market value for salary is expected

Animal Health Technology Program (on campus) - 2 Year Diploma

Welcome to the world of Animal Health Technology (AHT). Our two year on-campus career technical program offers a very high level of training in the field of animal care. Competition for admission is intense. The job market is varied and abundant. Potential employers include private veterinary clinics, research facilities, zoos and aquariums, pharmaceutical companies, and animal humane shelters to mention just a few.

Animal Health Technology Distance Education Program - 3 Year Diploma:

TRU now offers the only AHT Distance Education program in Canada where the student can study and complete their education from anywhere in Canada. There are no on-campus requirements. The student must be a paid employee working in a Canadian veterinary clinic for a minimum of 20 hours per week while enrolled in the program

Animal Welfare Certificate Distance Program

The Animal Welfare Certificate is a Distance Education studies program for animal caregivers who are interested in upgrading their work skills or for individuals interested in a career in Animal Welfare. The Animal Welfare Certificate Program was jointly developed by Thompson Rivers University (TRU), and the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA).

The Agriculture department at UFV’s Chilliwack campus offers a comprehensive one-year Livestock Production certificate and two-year Agriculture Technology diploma with an option
in Livestock Production. Once you’ve completed the one-year certificate, you can ladder directly into the diploma. As a livestock production student, you will participate in hands-on learning in our UFV barn.

Career Opportunities in Horticulture:
For those with education and practical skills, career opportunities in agriculture are excellent. UFV agriculture graduates are successful in finding jobs throughout the horticulture industry.

They find employment in greenhouses, golf courses and landscaping companies, as grounds maintenance personnel and as technicians with various levels of government. Others find careers in the agri-business sector in marketing, sales, and service. Some graduates return to family-owned enterprises or start their own small business.

Qualified graduates of the diploma option in horticulture are eligible to transfer to Olds College in Alberta where they will receive transfer credit towards a Bachelor of Science degree in applied horticulture technology.

Career Opportunities in IPM:
People with IPM training are needed by the horticulture industry to identify and assess pest problems, and help to recommend and help to implement management programs. Career opportunities in IPM for qualified applicants are expected to increase over the next several years.

Graduates may find work as IPM field scouts in nurseries, greenhouses, or for field crop and/or orchard operations. Graduates may work directly for growers, for IPM consulting firms, or as technicians in various government research programs.

Vancouver Island University
Vancouver Island University offers a 9-month Horticulture Technician Foundation Program. The program is taught at the G.R. Paine Horticulture Centre located on a 32 acre site near Vancouver Island University’s Nanaimo Campus. Our location and facilities provide our students with a broad range of horticulture experiences including plant identification and propagation, greenhouse and nursery crop production, pest management, landscape design, landscape construction and maintenance.
